Personal Statement
At school I enjoyed story-telling through writing. At the age of 16 however I suffered a severe stroke, which affected my language skills. As a result, in rehab I changed direction from writing to story-telling through visual media – art, photography, and ultimately film.
I went on to complete a degree course in Practical Filmmaking at Met Film School (West London University) I have gone on to edit and assistant edit various films. Whilst at film school I explored roles such as director, sound mixing etc. but editing is what I most enjoy and where my strengths lie.
As an editor I am most familiar with Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro. I can add graphics and simple effects, prepare tracks for sound mixing, and upload cuts for screening.
Before starting my degree course I worked on projects including editing assistant on the feature documentary How to Change the World and various short films. It was a great experience to have the chance to work with director Jerry Rothwell, and I learnt a lot watching his process.
In preparing to study at Met I did a three-week Avid editing course and I have since supplemented that with an Avid Media Composer conversion course for editors. Recently I was an assistant editor on the ITV drama series The Walk-in and consider myself familiar with Avid. I recently edited a series of short films about the HETV training for Snowed-in Productions and the BBC on Avid.
I had a very positive reaction to my graduation film I Speak. It’s an experimental film about my journey with speech. I entered it for a number of festivals. The film was nominated for the Metfilm Smart Screen Creative Awards, 2017 and the film won 2nd prize at the UKABIF short-film awards (Nov 2017). It was shown at the Together! 2017 Disability Film Festival. The success of I Speak encouraged a follow-up called I Bake, a near-silent comedy which explores aspects of my life with right-sided weakness. The two films were selected to be screened together with a self-portrait as an installation at the Espacio and Hundred Years Gallery. I am currently raising funding for the third film in what has become a trilogy, I Bleed.
I worked through 2019/20 as an assistant editor on The Reason I Jump with Director Jerry Rothwell again. It’s a feature documentary about young autistic people without speech so was close to my heart. It brought together material shot around the world, so was a challenge to organise the material and another great learning experience.
In 2023 I worked as assistant editor on a Disney+ drama series, Shardlake. It was a close-knit team and a very satisfying experience.
