MY OWN FILMS

I Bake (Short Film)

Following on from the success of my film I Speak, my new short film I Bake is a near-silent comedy about a serious subject – my right-sided weakness following a stroke. The film follows me through a day – getting up, shopping, and baking a cake, detailing all the subtle adjustments I have to make in order to manage.
My own journey is counterpointed with that of a physical comedy great, Geoff Hoyle, stumbling through a similar day without the strategies that I employ. This character, though funny, is also my nightmare self; the self who can’t cope.
At the end, I take the cake out of the oven, and share it with my alter ego.

It premiered successfully in the UK at the Together! Disability Film Festival. I Speak and I Bake were screened together as an installation at the Espacio Gallery in Bethnal Green and then were selected from an open call to screen at the Hundred Years Gallery in Hoxton.

I Speak (Short Film)

When Joel Morrison emerged from a coma following a stroke nine years ago, he had completely lost the ability to speak. He had to learn to sound letters again from scratch. His moving and beautiful film interweaves dance and therapy to explore poetically his journey back to language.

I entered it for a number of festivals. The film was nominated for the MetFilm Smart Screen Creative Awards, 2017 and the film won 2nd prize at the UKABIF short-film awards (Nov 2017). It was shown at the Together! 2017 Disability Film Festival.
